Ugh-I’m sorry-it’s wild! My 22 yr old niece was complaining about the same issue. I’m glad that people are starting to call out the lack of research on women. Although, it seems all the funding for even basic medical research has just vanished. 🫣
“Women’s health seems to be a black hole between child birth and death.”
So freaking true. 😐 Whenever I am able to research something going on with me, I am met with the same derision is see in these comments. They don’t know this, but I usually only trust Mayo & Cleveland Clinic. I’m not looking at message boards or homeopathic health sites – nothing wrong with those, but I go with the trusted medical sites first. I feel like they’re all saying – then why did you come here…? We know our own body’s idiosyncrasies better than they do. Here is something else I’ve noticed too, the more gray in your hair, the more you doubted. Pisses me off.
I can honestly say, I’ve loved Cat Stevens music most of my life. You’re right about his mature voice. He’s still got it going on. Enjoy your week of camp! ♥️
I am with you on medication side effect. It’s like the Drs have this secret list that don’t like to tell us about. My daughter recently had a kidney transplant and was started on anti rejection medication. She started having extreme burning in her hands. Her transplant nurse insisted this was not a side effect and said he had never heard Of such a thing. After two days if misery I became a goigle MD. Turns out is a very serious side effect of the one medication. So I took her to Emergency room. After waiting 6 hours they finally get her back and check her medication levels. It was five times the normal level. They had to give her a different medication and do two blood transfusions. I feel like side effects are important and we need to be told what to look for. The healthcare system is so overwhelmed and unfortunately it leaves patients having to be our own advocate. Researching the internet to find answers seems to be easier than asking the Dr and the eye roll they give you. But when your Google degree proves them wrong it’s kind of like omg am I more qualified than you?! Lol. Loving your newsletter and always love the meal plan. Feeding the fam is literally my demise😂
I loved reading your book. Thank you! And those are the moments where our instincts are so powerful and can’t be ignored. I’m so glad you kept pushing. I hope she continues to heal and recover. And you make her many tasty meals hah
Love the Whole30 TW - I succumbed when I was still in COLLEGE but there was a sweet potato, chicken, avocado bowl with a dressing that was sooooo good and I'm reminding myself I can still love that dope ass dish without the toxic bits!
The issue of the Women’s Health Black Hole makes me want to stand on a soapbox screaming into the wind. (Don’t even get me started on pelvic floor PT and how most postpartum women could clear up myriad ailments with a few good sessions.)
I’m also very wary of the jump from the (excellent!) increased convo about perimenopause to the “it’s your hormones” reflexive answer that has emerged in recent years if a woman between the age of 38 and 60 has ANY health concerns. As you said, sometimes it is and sometimes it isn’t! People keep pushing various hormone creams and supplements (friends as well as the internet) as a cure-all for every ill, and I discussed them with my excellent PCP as well as my GYN and they *both* basically said “listen, almost everyone feels amazing on hormones. They’re really incredible for menopause symptoms. But they’re only proven safe for 5 years, and if you take them now to perk up your mid-40s, you won’t have them out there for you when you’re actually going through menopause.” I don’t accept everything they say without questioning but it did make me think a little more about the friends insisting that their mail-order hormone cream is the ultimate life hack. My mom refused hormones completely because she was scared of cancer risk, and her menopause symptoms went on forever and were so bad; I’d much rather wait and have them available for me then!
It just worries me that “pop some hormones; it’s perimenopause” is now turning into the (ironic) panacea/easy button for dismissing women in a whole new and different way, you know? (My doc said she thinks it’s the increased ease of using online medicine that has allowed all these instagram start-ups that are hawking a quick zoom appointment to get an Rx; always follow the money on stuff like this!!)
Ugh it is so insanely frustrating. I didn’t realize the 5 year thing. I wish they would just focus on women like they do men but that’s not happening any time soon. And you’re right, the internet medicine hole is so unknown and unregulated.
Hi, Elise! Joining the chorus of people saying they had no idea of this side effect of SSRIs. I’ve been on them for almost 24 years and had no idea. Have been super sweaty during/after my walks this spring and summer. So glad to know why!
I was one of those “wow I had no idea!?” People. Every day it seems At 49, I learn something new about living in female body and I rarely learn it from a doctor. 😵💫 Happy Birthday to Leo!
Are they just too overwhelmed? I had such a bad experience with my allergy shots and my doctor belittling my issues and it’s so hard to not question everything

It’s devastating

I wish there was a supplement or something we could take to counteract it. I’m just a wet fish all summer
